The Real Cost of Immigration

My comments on this news:

Investor's Business Daily reports on economist Ed Rubenstein's work in an excellent article on immigration. Rubenstein is a longtime and valued contributor to studies on the economic and fiscal impact of mass immigration. His recent study takes into account more government programs than have previously been considered.  The report addresses legal as well as illegal alien immigration.

The high net cost of immigration to tax-payers is, in reality, only part of the cost. Programs do not grow as quickly as the demands made on them.  Therefore, citizens lose when resources are diverted to services for a rapidly growing immigrant population.

Education illustrates the point. School budgets are perennially stretched, and Americans children are likely to be short-changed when resources go to foreign newcomers. Classes are held back by non-English speakers, and the financial resources dedicated to teaching ESL [English as Second Language] students may be diverted from other children.

Rubenstein's research also addresses job losses and wage depression that result from the influx of low-wage workers willing to work cheaply and often without benefits such as healthcare insurance. These writings may be found in the Rubenstein archive at www.VDare.com .
